What you will do

Trek in the Ecuadorian Andes while you discover a magic world of stunning landscapes, rural hidden villages, local indigenous communities and massive volcanoes. These features and more come together to shape the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes in the Ecuadorian highlands. This trekking adventure through the narrow trails used by the local mountain people will take you deep into the heart of the Andean culture, enabling you to experience the local way of living. Trek for 3 days to reach Quilotoa volcano, hike down the base of the volcano's crater-lake and swim in the volcanic waters. Hike up to the 5000m glacier of Chimborazo highest volcano in Ecuador. Discover legends and secrets of the Gods' ¨volcanoes¨ through the local knowledge of the people, and finally enjoy volcanic hot springs and multiple outdoor adventures in Baños town.

Day 1
Quito

Arrival in Quito

Welcome to Quito! The biggest, best-preserved colonial city of America was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city is considered the Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day exploring the old town of Quito and the surrounding area. 
In the evening, one of our trip leaders will meet you at the hotel for a welcome briefing and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Our first day is an informational and acclimation day.

Day 2
Ecuador

Visit Cotopaxi Volcano

Today we will visit an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located in the Latacunga canton of Cotopaxi Province, about 50 km (31 mi) south of Quito, and 33 km (21 mi) northeast of the city of Latacunga, Ecuador, in South America.

Activity: Trekking Adventure in Cotopaxi

We will begin our day heading south of Quito to visit Cotopaxi National Park. Here we have our first acclimation hike around Limpiopungo Lake at 13000ft (3800 meters) above sea level and see wild horses, wild bulls and some bird species. From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Cotopaxi volcano. Concluding our day, we will drive to Isinlivi where we will spend the night.
Trekking time: 2 hours on flat terrain around Limpiopungo lagoon, elevation: 12,631 ft

Day 3
Chu Chugchilán

Trekking From Toachi Canyon to Chugchilan

Today we will have a trek along the Toachi canyon, with stunning views of small villages and indigenous people working in the fields. We will hike down to the canyon of the Toachi River and then back up to the main road that will take us to Chugchilán, a small town located on the middle of the Quiltoa loop. 

Activity: Trekking Through The Toachi Canyon to Chugchilan

The magic Andean mountain landscapes will inspire us today on a trek along the Toachi canyon for 13.5 km (8,4 miles), with stunning views of small villages and indigenous people working in the fields. We will hike down to the canyon of the Toachi River and then back up to the main road that will take us to Chugchilan, a small town located on the middle of the Quiltoa loop. Here we will find our Eco-house accommodation and in the afternoon we can explore the village with the fantastic opportunity to share a bit of the cultural experience with locals.
Trekking time: 2 hours downhill from 10,810 ft. to the Toachi River at 9,500 ft and then 2 hours uphill to Chugchilán at 10,498 ft. Total steps:25,481

Day 4
Quilotoa

Chugchilan to Quilotoa Hike

Today we will have a hiking adventure on small trails used by locals to transport products and to travel across canyons to reach neighboring communities. We will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Quilotoa Lake. The magic of this place will take your breath away. 

Activity: Trekking Chugchilan to Quilotoa

After breakfast, early in the morning, we will start our hiking adventure for 11 km (6,9 miles) on small trails blazed by the mountain people and still used by locals to transport products and to travel across canyons to reach neighboring communities. While trekking on this trail, you often see the traditional custom of exchanging goods with one another still being utilized. We will hike down across impressive canyons to later climb back up to the top of the crater rim, where you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Quilotoa Lake. The magic of this place will take your breath away. We will lodge in Quilotoa village and enjoy the local cuisine.

Day 5
Quilotoa

Visit to Quilotoa Crater Lake

Today we will visit a water-filled caldera and the most western volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. The Quilotoa Crater Lake. The 3-kilometre (2 mi)-wide caldera was formed by the collapse of this dacite volcano following a catastrophic eruption about 800 years ago, which produced pyroclastic flows and lahars that reached the Pacific Ocean, and spread an airborne deposit of volcanic ash throughout the northern Andes.

Activity: Trekking to The Quilotoa Crater Lake

Quilotoa crater-lake is our main goal today. After breakfast, we will take a hike down to the base of the crater for 1.2 km (0,75 miles).Following this path, you will have an awesome view of the lake and many chances to take pictures of the turquoise water-filled caldera. Once at the bottom of the lake we will have some time to explore the crater of this mythical, active volcano. Here you will have the opportunity to go for a swim in the volcanic water or do some kayaking. For the way back up to the top, it is possible to rent a mule and ride the challenging steep trail. In the afternoon we get a transfer to the area of Riobamba, located in the central part of the Ecuadorian highlands.

Day 6
Baños

Waterfalls & Cable Cars

Today we will travel along visit the second highest waterfall in Ecuador, the Pailon Del Diablo, and 

Activity: Road of Waterfalls & Baños Hot Springs

Today we will drive farther south to Puyo, where we will have a quick look at the balsa carving shop. Continuing our journey, we will stop at Rio Verde, located in one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Sangay National Park. We'll hike down to the second highest waterfall in Ecuador, the Pailon Del Diablo, where pounding water cascades on the rocks and mesmerizes you as you watch from a suspension bridge. You may also take an optional hike behind the falls.

After a quick drive, we will arrive at another incredible waterfall called El Manto de la Novia, and we'll hop in to a cable car to traverse the Pastaza River canyon.

In the late afternoon, we will soak in hot springs in the town of Baños, located right on the foothills of the Tungurahua volcano which has been active since 1999. It erupts approximately every few months with incredible lava and steam. Eruptions can safely be viewed from a number of view points in the region.

Day 7
Baños

Visit to Baños

Baños is one of the most popular and important tourist spots in the country. Here you will find many Ecuadorian families vacationing here. One look to this delightfully green mountain town and you will know why. Surprisingly, it is pleasant and unspoiled. The town, very well known for its spectacular location right on the foothills of the Tungurahua active volcano, is the perfect setting for outdoor activities, including horseback riding, canyoning, hiking, mountain biking, climbing and rafting. 

Activity: Hike to the Road of Waterfalls and Return to Quito

This morning we will hit the road of the waterfalls. The first stop will be at the Bride's Veil waterfall, where we will take the Tarabita (cable car) to get across the Pastaza River. Then we will hike down for one hour to the Pailon del Diablo waterfall, the second highest in Ecuador. After a day full of adventures in the cloud forest, you will enjoy the scenic ride returning us to Quito City.
